2 Many DJs
I'd like to thank my good ol' friend Dom for having me listen to these guys in the first place! It's Halloween 2007, me and my girlfriend are throwing a party at home for our friends and colleagues. The night is well on it's way, alcoholic beverages dispensed (some illicit substances may or may not have been ingested by some), the mood is pretty light and friendly, yet the dance floor (our living room) is just not lifting all that much. That's when my friend Dom has a brilliant idea: he rushes off to to his car and brings back a few burned CD-Rs, including the second 2 Many DJ's As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 1 (along with Justice as well). Maybe it was the alcohol (or the illicit substances), but, although the tunes on this set were sometimes quite familiar - songs I had heard thousands of times on the radio, the way these artists put them together was fresh and new; like listening to them all over again for the first time. Whether they be radio-friendly pop hits or obscure electro dance tunes or classic rock or country, or metal, or what not; nothing was too sacred to be processed through the brother's knack for all things cool. This is seriously some of the most fun and addictive party music I've heard in ages. Just popping one of their many releases into your stereo is a 100% guaranteed party booster.
So how come it took so long for me to hear from these guys? 2 Many DJ's is the work of the Dewaele brothers (David and Stephen) whom also perform under the Soulwax moniker (as their alternative, electro-clash alter egos). I don't care much for their work as Soulwax, but once these guys get their music collection together and start mashing up the tunes behind their turntables (sometimes three at a time), that's when the magic begins. These guys obviously love all the bands they choose and play around with during these sets and it shows. It's hard to explain, but their choice of mash-ups (playing two or more tunes simultaneously at the same tempo to create new rhythms and sounds) is always done with the utmost care in order to lift them up to new levels; sometimes the results are funny, sometimes they're plain ol' weird, but most of the time, they're just fucking intense beyond words!
