Acid Mothers Temple
Acid Mothers Temple paved my path towards psychedelic music enlightenment. If it weren't for them, I would never have gone on to Ash Ra Tempel, Can, Neu! and even Fushitsusha! Their music was loud, totally overblown and addictive, but never uncompromising. Their comic nature made it easy to like them; the colorful artwork, hilarious song titles and trivial connections with the sub-culture which inspired them (Zappa, Hendrix, Ash Ra Tempel, Pink Floyd, Terry Riley! Just to name a few).
Acid Mothers Temple is at the center of a much broader universe of artists; not unlike the Finnish folk scene, many members of AMT also have their own side projects and side-side projects! Makoto Kawabata alone, the frizzy-haired leader of the group, surely has over ten different projects under his belt (and that's not counting his collaborations!!!), including the much famed Mainliner trio who brought The Rallizes Denudés' distorted sound to unimaginable levels! Acid Mothers Temple however are slightly easier to access, if not musically, aesthetically. Their sound ranges anywhere from eastern-traditional folk-inspired numbers to wall-chattering force fields of noise, but always with psychedelic noises and effects to tie their entire output into a neat little package.
Which brings us to the next point, their productivity! It is mind boggling to see the rate at which albums (and EPs, splits, you name it!) are being released; it is not irregular to find a new AMT record every fortnight! And let's not forget the many side projects and their innumerable outings! For a while, I tried to collect everything they put out, but abandoned pretty quickly when I noticed, there was just no way I could keep up. I literally was beaten, so I went on and collected mostly works from other artists, but now and then, when I see a new AMT which seems to be quite interesting, I go for it.
