Beginning with a french woman psycho-babbling for the first two minutes, this album pushes the weird factor up a notch, but the intense heavy psych is as insane as ever. Kawabata's soloing is so over-the-top, like a million Kerry King's on a bad acid trip, it is difficult not to smile or even laugh out loud. There is definitely something comical about AMT's take on psychedelic rock and it adds to it's "charm" (that's if you find in-your-face psych rock noise to be charming) and makes the whole thing much more accessible. This music is fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. Pataphisical is the perfect gateway into this group's universe, there's a perfect balance between their heavier tunes and their drone-folk tracks (as with White Summer Of Love). Again, many tracks are bundled into longer tracks, but not just one long work as with their eponymous first album. Definitely recommended for first time listeners! |
