Released way back in 1984, Buddhas Of Golden Light is the last record on Airaksinen's O Records label (which was also behind the infamous Shh! album by his earlier psych-noise outfit Sperm). It is also the first (of many) albums on which he uses the Roland TR-808 drum machine, a revolutionary device at the time which was going to change the face of dance music a few years later. Joined on saxophone by former Sperm colleague Antero Helander, the duo manage to create a mix of primitive jazzy sounds and psycho-dance: like a bunch of robots, straight out of a 50's sci-fi flick, trying to operate your brain using kitchen utensils. Incredibly weird stuff here folks! It is quite difficult to describe this album, it sounds both dated and ahead of it's time at once. The second (unpronounceable) track is a fun little ambient number, a moment of peace between the long freak-outs! |
