Composed and recorded in 1980, but released only in 1996, M58 (along with the similar M42) are some of my favorite albums by Airaksinen. Each one of these tracks is dedicated to deep space entities (nebulas and star clusters) from the Messier catalogue (a french astronomer who published a book of his findings during the 18th century). These recordings have an aura of mystery to them which was slowly disappearing as Airaksinen progressed towards a cleaner sound. Although I would think the music here is composed on a synthesizer, it is impossible to tell. The sounds are drenched in delay and reverb, creating the perfect ambient atmosphere for it's cosmological theme. No pompous synth sounds here, everything is kept at it's basest, most simple form, and this truly makes the album stand out above much of Airaksinen's later work.
