Pekka Airaksinen might not want to admit listening to contemporary and trendy electronic music, trying to keep his compositions pure and free of any outside influences, but this album reeks of techno, or more precisely, big beat. Like Jandek trying to recreate the Chemical Brothers' sound, the beats might be steady, but the music is completely off-the-wall. This concept might sound interesting on paper, but I can't really say it works out in the end. The title track has the same kind of naive charm found on his Union In Space album, there are some interesting samples of buddhist monks chanting on Sun That Makes Happy and the second half of Conqueror Of Diamond Ear, when the song breaks up and never recovers has to be heard to be believed. This was all composed back in 1997 and it sure sounds like a product of that year. Worth a listen, but only for the most curious out there. |
