Recorded back in 1966, AMM's first album might have discernable jazzy moments, but the sounds within remain so completely free, it's no wonder people did not know how to react to it when it was first released. Although the group's sound would become increasingly unrestrained (and yet refined) as the group scaled down to a trio (losing Cardew and Sheaff), one immediately notices that the artists' vision was fully formed from the very beginning. How does one describe such an album when there is no recognizable rhythmic pattern and all we can hear sounds like random noises, scrapes and unidentifiable noises. Hearing this today, I can tell how much of an influence this band has probably been on the future musical excursions of NNCK. To me, this is absolute musical freedom; unbound, unchained, unrelenting and unique. This CD version includes extended versions of the two tracks from the LP with some additional bonus material. |
