AMM

National Flag

Formed in 1965 and usually comprising the trio of Eddie Prévost, Lou Gare and Keith Rowe, AMM are an experimental music aficionado's dream come true. Based in free jazz, the music that would result from their experimentations would sound like nothing you'd ever heard before. It was completely alien, sometimes overwhelming and sometimes ethereal and far outside of any music standard. In other words, they were unique. It seems their only goal might have been to create completely new soundscapes; alien sounds made by human hands, using human (and therefore imperfect) instruments. Even though these sounds might be out-of-this-world, there is still something quite fragile and vulnerable about them. So it is not completely cold and inaccessible. When they are not trying to scare you off, a lot of it sounds quite beautiful... in a transcendental sort of way of course!

I don't remember what brought me to listen to AMM in the first place. If I remember right, it was sheer curiosity. I had heard the name, seen the records in stores, but didn't know a thing about them. I found a few of their covers fascinating (like the one for The Crypt), so I began reading about them on the internet to scratch the itch that I had. Most of what I read did help me in wanting to listen to them, so I downloaded a few tracks and I soon found out that no one is ably capable of describing the AMM sound; which is a good thing and can only deepen their uniqueness. It was only much later that I have managed to find a used copy of The Inexhaustible Document (they all seem quite hard to get a hold of) in a store to start off my collection. It's a great album and you can bet there will be more added sooner or later.
