I love AMM's early experimental outings the most, but I promised myself I would try and find all their works, regardless of which period they were culled from. To Hear And Back Again is decidedly one of their most jazz-oriented works. Although free in spirit (Lou Gare's saxophone sounds remarkably similar to Albert Ayler's playing), the album is unfortunately pretty unremarkable. Only the intro to Back Again made me prick up my ears, but it doesn't take long before the duo eventually fall back into familiar territory. Only Kunstmusik, with it's distant alien signals piercing their way through the cosmos at speeds greater than light, sounds truly spectacular and unusual (and worthy of AMM's earlier efforts). Duett immediately places our feet back firmly on the ground after such a particular ride which we slowly forget with each hit of the snare and every shriek of the saxophone. Although unimpressed, it won't stop me from hunting for more.
