Angelblood
An (almost) all-female off-shoot of The No Neck Blues Band who delve into the realm of metal (check out the imagery) without always sounding like metal at all! Even though these metal elements create a common link between their albums, all are quite different. All albums have been released on the japanese label Captain Trip which also released a few NNCK albums a couple of years back.
I was curious about this group, being already a huge fan of The No Neck Blues Band (David Nuss, an avowed fan of metal is a member). I had read the articles at Aquarius Records, so I decided to get the albums. Actually saved a few bucks by getting them all on eBay. When I finally got to listen to them two weeks later, I have to admit I was somewhat unimpressed. Maybe my expectations were too high when I was expecting to hear NNCK gone metal, but this didn't sound anything like that. Some of the music sounds quite amateurish and just not experimental enough (or charming enough, like The Shaggs or even Jandek when he's in a good mood) to get away with it. Besides David Nuss, Rita Ackerman, a renowned visual/performance artist from New York is also a member. Knowing this makes Angelblood sound gimmicky and it pretty much destroyed all interest I might have in the band. It's not all that bad, some albums are actually quite fun, but in general, it's simply not interesting. The albums stay in my collection only because of their relation with NNCK and Gang Gang Dance (Liz Bougatsos is also a member of Angelblood!).
