Once the first few seconds of Peacebone hit my ears, sounding like 38 Pac-Man games being played simultaneously, I was certain this was going to be as insane as any of Animal Collective's earliest efforts, but things eventually fall back to more familiar and rhythmic territory. This song is quite fucked up nonetheless as steel drums, a hyperactive chorus and demented screaming pop up along the way. Each song contains such little surprises and that is what is so wonderful about this band; their music might be pop-based, but it's so constantly strange that it's impossible to lose your attention. Whether it be the anthemic Chores (which at times sounds like an ode to the Pixies' Levitate Me), the Boards Of Canada-like synth work of #1 or Derek's soft/loud halves, there's enough musical candy here to satisfy even the most demanding of connoisseurs (and all you freaks and geeks out there). Still going strong! |
