Leading the Analord series is this wonderful seven-song EP (this is the only one in the series to feature so many tracks). As soon as SteppingFilter 101 starts and it's melody hits your ears, it's quite obvious James has traveled back in time to bring us some of the finest specimens of analog synth music. It's like the early nineties all over again! Although there are no duds on the EP, some tracks do stand out. Where's Your Girlfriend? is particularly addictive and well-constructed with it's fascinating lead buzz saw melody. I actually prefer some of the "filler" tracks to the longer pieces; the fourth untitled track is simply astounding. Mysterious, brooding and criminally short; the piece disappears just as quickly as it had it's grip on you. And what would an AFX be without at least one hyperactive attack on the senses? This task is fulfilled by the schizophrenic Grumpy Acid; a flamboyant exercise in dizzy dance music if there ever was one.
