Analord 2 & 4 might be some of my favorite material from the series, but it is this one, Analord 10, which has the honors of being the best. Aphex Twin's work is usually quite complex, but for most of the Analord titles, he seems to have gone back to a more simplistic, and (yes - even though I hate the term) "old school" way of composing and mixing... except for these two songs. Both tracks here rival with even classics like Windowlicker and Come To Daddy. Fenix Funk 5 starts the EP off on fucked up note with crazy robot voices playing to a beat; but it's once the synthesized harpsichord comes in that the tune really lifts off and starts morphing continuously. Don't blink or you might miss some details. my favorite track, XMD 5a, is a mellower, but groovy track with a funky under water atmosphere and bizarre breaks which takes on an ominous vibe during the second half. This is the later picture disc edition of the EP (same music). |
