Aphex Twin
What? You've never heard of Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin, aka Caustic Window, aka Polygon Window, aka AFX? How big is that rock you've been hiding under!? The undisputed king of modern electronic music! How could you not have heard of him!? No but seriously, if you are reading this, you probably know more about the man than I myself do!
Aphex Twin's music is far ranging, from techno/rave, acid, ambient, cut-up beats to experimental, but all his records bear his signature. So many other artists he's influenced or encouraged to pick up equipment in order to make their own music have tried to emulate his sound; some have come dangerously close, yet there is always something that will separate the AFX from the rest. Namely, his sense of humor. Whereas many artists who were contemporaries of his usually glorified the serious side of electronic music (to fight the pointless war against those who used the "it's not real music because there are no real instruments" argument), his music would have this carelessness and free-spirit. And it seemed like he could do it with the greatest of ease. While others would painstakingly spend years to achieve the perfect sound for that brief three second passage at two minutes forty-eight seconds into the song, he could pull out something far greater in a fraction of that time. The Mozart/Salieri syndrome if you will. Others went on to adapt the humorous side later on (like Kid606, Cex or Blectum From Blechdum for example) when it was less hazardous to do so, but Aphex Twin will always have been the first.
I started listening to Aphex Twin at approximately the same time I started listening to Boards Of Canada. BoC left a bigger impression on me because it was definitely more what I was looking for at the time, but Aphex Twin grew on me and soon became a favorite alongside BoC. It was my friend from a record store I was working for in Montreal, an ex-local metalhead who had given up the guitar and opted for synthesizers instead, who turned me on to Richard D. James first. I remember him making me listen to the On EP and a few more ambient tracks. He was getting rid of some of his stuff to buy more equipment so I bought one or two records from him (and his old guitar) and went on from there. I had managed to collect approximately twenty different releases by the artist, but sold everything when I moved to Sweden. They're all on mp3 for the moment, but I will slowly be getting them back on CD or vinyl.
