Album Cover

When I first bought this record, I never really listened to it thoroughly. I stuck with James' later works like Come To Daddy or Windowlicker and also his ambient albums. So when I finally listen to this album again today, I feel like it represents the perfect balance between these two facets of his work. Even on the harsher, drum'n'bass tunes, there is always an underlying ambient quality to be found. The songs' arrangements are incredibly complex yet they always retain a certain childish innocence (an obvious influence on some of Boards Of Canada's work) making them much more accessible, just listen to opener Acrid Avid Jam Shred and you'll understand. The symphonic pieces would also impress minimalist composer Philip Glass enough for him to perform and record one of them (Icct Hedral (Edit)). In other words, it's a must-have classic. The cover art is a self-portrait by James.
