This was one of the first Aphex Twin releases I've owned. A friend of mine sold a few of them to me (and he was a huge fan, never was really sure why he got rid of them) and I remember it came in this cheap-looking snapper cases. Still, I remember falling in love with On from the very beginning; the trickling notes, dreamy pads and contrastingly pounding beats, never harsh, just really in-your-face. Things do get much... MUCH more aggressive on 73-Yips however with it's relentless clanging and incessant buzz; by itself, the tune can emit enough energy to build a small house with sound alone. The two last tracks are on the psychedelic side with D-Scape being my favorite of the two with it's creepy field recordings, pounding 4/4 beat and strange melodies. Xepha reminded me quite a bit of some of the later vocal-oriented work of The Third Eye Foundation. |
