Appe
Appe is Appe Vanajas, an artist from Finland who was also one of the many members of the legendary finnish psych collective Sperm, performing with them on stage at times. She was there during the release of the album Shh! and even helped to assemble the handmade packaging. She was also a member of Those Lovely Hulahands, another underground hippy group with folk/rock leanings. Years have passed since the care free days and people change and so has Appe. Her music is much more conventional today and draws heavily on the work of Janis Joplin. This is pretty far off from the psychedelic noise of Sperm, but her music retains a certain peaceful hippy charm. She has a particular voice as well: it comes out nice and strong, but she mumbles her lines as well at times. It's immediately noticeable and gives her songs a twisted little edge.
I didn't know she was still making music today. I only found out when she offered me this CD while I was in Finland shooting a short film about Pekka Airaksinen. She is an extremely friendly lady and I still keep in contact with her.
