When I received this CD as a gift back in 2005, I sort of knew what to expect (although I didn't know she was still making music). Not only did I get a sneak preview on the day I interviewed her for a short film I was making in Finland, but just by the song titles and the cover art, the music within sort of revealed itself to me. It took me a while to actually put it in the CD player and listen to it and in a way I'm glad I did, because I had time to let go of my expectations. No this music is not experimental, it's barely psychedelic (except for the wonderful fuzz guitar passages) and it's quite commercial as well. Some of this work could easily play on the radio. There is however some strong talent on display here, Appe is obviously immersed in her song world and she does it passionately and this comes through loud and clear throughout these fifteen songs. There's some lovely harmonium on Daddy. |
