This album suffers from what I call the Full Metal Jacket syndrome. That is when the first half of an album (or a film) is so incredibly strong and mesmerizing that the other half pales in comparison. Not that it's not good, in fact it's very good, but you find yourself playing only the first four-five songs over and over again and only on occasions do you let it play in it's entirety. Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. It's such a well-crafted song. I don't understand all these comparisons to the Pixies. Sure it's got Pixies-esque elements at times (Une Année Sans Lumière), a lot of other bands have done it before, but never as well as this! That's the beauty of influences, when you can turn them it into something completely your own without emulating. I hear some Pulp in here to. Emphasis on the "some". |
