Album Cover

I find Ariel Pink's freakish take on pop music infectious almost without fail and Lover Boy is no exception. Everything he's put out so far has had moments of brilliance, but on the whole, some albums are quite uneven. Along with The Doldrums and Worn Copy, Lover Boy holds some of the strongest material by the LA native, completing my Holy Trinity of Pink's work. Of course not all nineteen tracks are gems, but the duds are rare and even these have at least a few redeeming qualities. If you, like me, enjoy Ariel's usual "I-taped-it-directly-from-our-old-TV-set-with-a-microphone" sound quality, then you're in for quite a treat as this is easily one of his most lo-fi records to date! There would be too many highlights to list here and none really stand out above the others, but I do have a few personal favorites like Ghosts, She's My Girl and New Trumpets Of Time. I had pre-ordered this album directly from the label and it took almost a year to obtain.
