Albert Ayler
Just as I don't differentiate a Sun Ra record from a Sun Ra & His Arkestra record on my site, neither will I make two artists of Albert Ayler and Albert Ayler Trio. Ayler was one of the most primal free jazz musicians to ever walk on God's green Earth. His saxophone wails are often the equivalent of a primal scream. His career would start off in the US, but it would bring him on the other side of the ocean, in Scandinavia of all places and that's where he would slowly make it before returning to the states. In Sweden he has collaborated with famed musician Don Cherry. He would go on too record for ESP (to whom he introduced Patty Waters!) and for Impulse!.
If it wasn't for emusic.com, I probably would never have heard of Albert Ayler before. I was into Miles Davis and Pharoah Sanders at the time, but that was pretty much it. I downloaded the mp3s of three different albums from emusic, but would never listen to them. I liked the ESP records, but I preferred the psych-bands like Cromagnon and Godz to the jazz records. It was only much later on, after I started buying Sun Ra records and with the arrival of the huge and much praised box set Holy Ghosts, that I decided to collect Ayler's records. These are the first ones, more on the way!
