Something is quite creepy about this album, well, at least the title track. Is it just me or does Mary Maria's sing-song vocals sound remarkably similar to those of "Nancy" on Jandek's Foreign Keys album. Well, I find it eerie! Ayler might be a more overtly gifted musician than Jandek, but both musicians are quite wild and free in their playing. Besides Masonic Inborn, Part 1, this album is relatively straightforward and a far cry from Ayler's earlier, and more exploratory albums (not that this album is close to conformity, far from it!). The shorter tracks have plenty of vibrato-crazy vocals which clash with the music, but this is an Ayler trademark, everything is pushed out and wild and will sometimes unite to form something quite cathartic after all the chaos. I don't really enjoy the last track, Drudgery, as it is pretty standard blues (with guitar solo!) and Ayler's saxophone playing is quite restrained. |
