This live album by Ayler might begin quite smoothly, but it is probably the most hectic of all his ESP albums. His fascination for military march music has a prominent role throughout the album, taking familiar tunes (like Frances national anthem La Marseillaise for example) and adapting them to his own free-form jazz aesthetics. Again, the way he goes from these tunes into improvised and rapid-fire territory and back again is what makes his music so fascinating. Angels includes the harpsichord, giving the track a strange old-fashioned twist. My favorite track on the album is the last track, Prophet as it is almost relentless in it's aggressiveness. |
