Albert Ayler's first recording is as wild as any of his later recordings. The opening Ghosts: First Variation starts with a pleasant military-type melody (something which would often show up throughout his career) but rapidly morphs into a free jazz masterpiece. The sax sometimes letting the bass have a go at it. What is fascinating with this record is the way the trio goes from a prepared melody or intro into totally free and boundless territory only to gradually integrate the melodies in once again. This is done seamlessly and without paying attention, you might miss these small details. The freer moments on the album are quite intense as the band plays a thousand notes a minute, it has a very stressful and busy sound, but that is the whole point. Not good for relaxation but wonderful headphone music nonetheless. |
