I never planned on getting this record, but having found it used at a reasonable price, I decided to get it to complete my Banhart collection. The EP features a bunch of the early, lo-fi tracks that made me fall in love with this artist's music in the first place. Many of the tracks are found in slightly different versions on other albums, but some are exclusive, so if you're a completist: you need this! My favorite track here is unfortunately the shortest however. Bluebird is a pleasant bluesy folk tune which will make you want to sit on your front porch out in the country on a hot summer day with a jar full of lemonade by your side. Old Thunderbird is another highlight with it's muddled, droning vocals. If you prefer Banhart's later, "clearer" period, you might be frightened by this release as the hiss is ubiquitous and loud, still... it contains some of the most beautiful music by artist. |
