This album was released back to back with Rejoicing In The Hands and indeed they are both very similar in the way they were recorded and the overall direction of the songs. Once again, you get a series of pleasant folk tunes: sometimes played solo, sometimes with the accompaniment of a small orchestra. It is difficult not to let yourself be swept away by the personal nature of these recordings. Banhart is like an open book and each song is a new page full of big letters and pleasant black and white drawings. Wake Up, Little Sparrow is an especially beautiful number (although they all are in their own way) about the title sparrow; very simple and very effective. Little Yellow Spider is another remarkably fun tune with the most sweetly psychedelic and absurd lyrics. It always puts an amused frown on my face. A Ribbon is another highlight with it's immense melancholy. |
