This is a beautiful and unique record. It's incredibly lo-fi, the tape hiss is thick and uneven from song to song, but that just adds to the warmth of the music. The twenty-two short folk tracks here are simple and charming. Right from the start, Banhart manages to suck you into his world or repel you immediately. His voice is an acquired taste, especially when he yells and the sound becomes distorted (Nice People..., Lend Me Your Teeth). There is something very Jandekian about this album, it's a one man affair, it sometimes sound quite amateurish, but obviously the man knows how to play the guitar and has a sense of dynamic and melody. The albums that were to follow would never sound as raw as this one does having been recorded in a studio instead of a bedroom and somehow all this tape hiss and fragility is missed.
