Dilate is easily my favorite album by Bardo Pond since their classic debut Bufo Alvarius. It's a lot mellower and focused throughout most of the album, but also much more mesmerizing. The opening Two Planes with it's dejected guitar playing, lovely string arrangements and psychedelic noises is a great example. This is the music I hear in my head when I'm having one of my regular existential crisis.Aphasia is another such haunting tune. It's four note cascading melody, coming at me in fuzzy colors, is incredibly catchy yet desolate. If you enjoy your Bardo Pond at their most fucked up and droning, be sure to check out the wonderfully moody Hum. The whole things with the Black Sabbath Vs. Harmonia leanings of Ganges. For a drug band, Bardo Pond sure can create some of the most depressing rock music out there. I wouldn't try tackling this one while stoned (unless someone hid all the sharp objects in the house beforehand). Devitalizing! |
