Alternative pop music has never sounded this warped and slanted. Imagine all your favorite shoegazer bands jamming all at once using THE guitar distortion pedal from GOD! and you've got Lapsed. Even on slower numbers like Pick My Brain (with vocals directly lifted from PJ Harvey), the background guitar is always fully fuzzed-out. Most of the time however, the album is intent on having you fall back on the couch, stoned out of your wits, blasted away by such powerful levels of rock'n'roll! Each chord strike from Flux or Straw Dog will propel you into the air, somersaulting in slow motion. The opening Tommy Gun Angel is particularly violent, like Windy & Carl on amphetamines. The best track on the album however is the closing Aldrin (Buzz on the moon?), a nearly fifteen minute long astral voyage which eventually goes Challenger on us. Not the best Bardo Pond record out there, but there's plenty of brain cells being burnt here. |
