This cooperation between Basinski and Chartier really leans towards the Chartier aesthetic. These drones are dark and minimal and have none of the charm of Basinski's usual work, gone are the melancholy filled loops and drones, gone are the withered old recordings with their ancient tones. Only the last four minutes of (20:53) has a slightly similar feel, the rest is very dark music indeed, but not without it's qualities. The second track starts off sounding like an ambient Pete Namlook track, but it slowly dissolves into muddy waters as the song progresses. I bought this record because Basinski's name was on it and I love his work, but I was expecting more of his trademark sounds and they are nowhere to be found. However, this remains a pretty nice dark ambient record, but it won't come out of the shelf so often. |
