I most truly believe I've now heard the sound of pure, unadulterated, distilled beauty. Melancholia might have been an achingly beautiful album, but El Camino Real is simply divine. This is the music heard by ancient Gods, the sounds of the infinite. It is timelessness itself. To think that this is simply another loop taken from Basinski's bottomless treasure trove of an archive is practically blasphemous once you've heard the wonderful results. Similar to the artist's Disintegration Loops, El Camino Real is a bass-heavy, decaying tape loop repeated ad infinitum. But with layers of reverb over the gorgeous string arrangements, the very subtle melody grows to almost ethereal proportions. It's hard to tell where the loop starts and ends, but every few seconds, voices of the angels seem to pierce through the sky to caress our ears as we continue our journey across fields of clouds. Nothing can touch or hurt you while you listen to this engrossing music.
