Album Cover

My fascination with William Basinski began with this recording which I had downloaded in mp3 format and then quickly purchased on CDR (then on CD!) as it obsessed me for the next few weeks and months. The album, which is comprised of a number of short minimalist loops (often barely recognizable piano bits) is truly the saddest sounds ever put to tape. Indeed, like many of Basinski's work, these were very old melodies which he had recorded in the eighties, preserved and reworked many years later. They do sound old and pastoral now as if they were from another time and place altogether (timeless would be a better word)! There is a strong sense of drama in these simple sounds yet their endless repetition and the lack of dynamic prevent them from falling into cliche soundtrack garbage. Truly lovely work!
