As is often the case with Basinski's work, the music on Shortwave Music was first recorded a long time ago (1982) and released (or composed) much later (in this case it appeared as a limited edition LP on Noton). This work was composed using different loops and manipulated shortwave radio transmissions, the results are haunting as can be expected from Basinski, but contrary to the tranquil moods of later albums, Shortwave Music is quite noisy in parts and is far from being as soothing as albums like Watermusic. Cobalt Pools for example has a very dark, industrial vibe to it, like Thomas Köner covering early Einstürzende Neubauten! Still, this album remains a very captivating listen and a must for anyone who is interested in hearing how Basinski's sound has developed with time. The CD is housed in a plastic shell similar to the one used for Melancholia wrapped in beautifully designed artwork including brief liner notes. First in a series of reissues. |
