With a title like that, from an artist like Birchville Cat Motel, you'd expect these two recordings to be an onslaught of droning high pitched insect sounds which could make you deaf in an instant if the volume dial is set anywhere higher than "2". But no, Kneale wouldn't dream of making his work so simple and associative. These two tracks present both sides of his work. The first side, Bees, is a calm, practically ambient number with a distorted drone and light sound waves surfacing here and there. Quite peaceful once the drone sets in. The other side however, Wasps, feels like being chopped up by a monster chainsaw and then ground to a pulp in a wood chipper (it actually sounds very similar!); someone plays a repetitive one note tune on a keyboard in the background while Hermann Nitsch mutilates everything in the barnyard. This one's not for the kiddies folks! |
