2004 was an incredible year for Kneale (his Beautiful Speck Triumph and With Maples Ablaze must be heard), but with Chi Vampires, he just might have released the ultimate BCM masterpiece; the one we will look back upon in the history books. With just four songs, we get to journey through some of the most intense sonic landscapes I've heard in this artist's discography; all the different facets of his work is explored and there is an incredible sense of drama here not found on his noisier numbers (although some of these Nitsch-like drones are far from soothing). My favorite track is the gut-wrenching Cold Herds Travel with it's powerful droning strings and organ. However, it's the title track that has gotten everyone all worked up. After a short intro, we are confronted with a blast of monolithic metal guitar riff/drone which will floor anyone who has let him or herself be lulled by the previous tracks. Nice!
