I love how Kneale can take one of the most minimal forms of sound, the drone, and really charge it chock full of drama, mood and atmosphere. It's like he is painting a small landscape using tape as his canvas. Sometimes the mood might be gloomy, like a rainy day at the docks on These Darkening Orbits (is that a wood chipper I hear?) or beautiful green pastures on Pale Arch Nemesis (and could that be nature morte on Mighty Spine Catcher?). I doubt the artist had this in mind when composing these (relatively) short tracks, but the music is definitely open for interpretation making it a very rewarding album after repeated listens. A lot of these drones are much noisier than the other hour-long releases he's been spewing forth at this point in his career so all you noise hounds should really check this out. A fascinating album yet again, but I personally prefer his more peaceful recordings.
