I didn't think it was possible to hear such a quiet Birchville Cat Motel album. As far as I know, this is Kneale's most ambient album to date. Another Miners Light feels as if you are sleeping inside and huge buzzing amplifier, cranked up to dangerous levels. The slightest sound would be devastating, but it never happens; a gentle guitar chord is strummed once in a while to balance out the menacing aspect of the piece. Slow Vehicle Bay might sound noisy at first, but with time, it's ambient qualities shine forth: soft swelling tones and pads blend perfectly with the electricity in the sound. The title track is one of the most beautiful works I've heard from this artist, it could easily be used as meditation music as chimes and chords resonate over a soft drone. Lovely. The two last tracks are in the same vein albeit with a slightly more disturbing atmosphere. A great album to start discovering this artist's work. |
