Oh my! This sounds and feels like a botched root canal at the dentist. The first few minutes sound like having your teeth scraped with a scythe by the Grim Reaper. Then comes the drill in the shape of a jackhammer, the doctors screw up blood fills your mouth and drips on the floor. They insert metal rods into your gums using pile drivers, break your jaw bone accidentally and keep at it until all is left of you is a bloody pulp. Yes, this record is that pleasant to listen to. We're far from the droning soundscapes we would usually associate with Birchville Cat Motel's usual work. Kneale is joined on this recording by saxophonist Jeff Henderson who pretty much violates the instrument throughout while his partner amplifies and manipulates GPS signals. I really wanted this recording when I found out it existed (I'm a completist, what can I say!), but after hearing it, I must say it's far from my favorite BCM album. |
