This short album was recorded live in a temple in Japan (where Kneale has made quite a name for himself). You can hear the rain, cars and even some audience members sneezing during the song and this gives it a nice intimate feel. Zenkoji starts off with the resonating chimes of a bell as weird feedback effects and oscillating sinewaves slowly build up into a drone. Things eventually get quite noisy with Kneale incorporating a huge slab of high-pitched feedback and distorted blasts of white noise into the recording. If he's not trying to awaken the gods and spirits which might be hovering around the temple, then I don't know what he's trying to do. All these noises intertwine and swell up into a frenzy of EVP-like sounds and ghostly feedback. The crowd seems stunned once the recording is over with only one or two hands clapping and Kneale shyly confirming it's over by thanking them for coming. |
