From the first seconds of Army Of Me, we find out the hard way that Björk opted for the dark side. This song is so heavy and pounding, it's impossible not headbang as if it it were some metal song (no wonder Helmet later covered the song)! The rest of the album is much friendlier than this first track (except maybe for Enjoy) and is quite close in spirit to it's predecessor. The sugary and pompous It's Oh So Quiet is a good example, but those soft-loud yelps and screams give the song an off-kilter vibe which makes it one of the album's many highlights. It's no wonder this album became so successful when it was released. Each track was a hit on it's own. From the bizarre dance number that is Hyper-Ballad, to the gentle and enchanting Isobel via the busy sounds of I Miss You, this eclectism works throughout and creates a semblance of homogeneity which has made it stand the test of time.
