This album was released shortly before the 9/11 attacks on NYC and it will always be associated with this difficult moment in my life. I had recently separated for the first time from my future (now ex) wife and had begun working in this really dodgy record store in downtown Montreal. It felt horrible coming in every day. I remember my boss asking me to go and purchase approximately forty copies of Vespertine from the big record store across the street so they could have a few copies of their own to sell. I also remember my boss being pissed off at me for not trying to get a discount (if you wanted me to ask for a discount why didn't you just say so you fucking twat)! I decided to get my own copy to catch up on her career. It is a difficult album, much to the image of my life at that point. Songs like Hidden Place, Pagan Poetry and Frosti became balm for my soul. Thank you! |
