The album starts off with the traditional short ambient intro. On the second track however, we get to hear the group sampling their own guitar playing (Fennesz you say?). This is something we haven't heard so clearly since their very earliest efforts (most of them you won't find commercially, you'll have to hunt down the mp3s to hear what I'm talking about). Although it sounds very nice, it also gives the songs this overly sweet hue which is new for Boards Of Canada. The melodies on earlier albums had this childlike charm, but there was always this dark undercurrent which is missing on this album. '84 Pontiac Dream, Slow This Bird Down and Tears From The Compound Eye sound like Music Has The Right [...]-era BoC, but most of the album includes the guitar samples. Maybe they'll need some getting used to, but there's no denying the fact that it gives the whole album this extra "naive" feel.
