It took me almost six years, but I finally decided to go back and get the very first of the many collaborations between Boris and Merzbow. After hearing it, I now understand what all the fuss was about and why this getting together has been going on for so many years. Although the later releases would be quite different from one another, I truly believe these two managed to find the perfect balance between both artist's sound. This came out when Boris were still thought of as a doom/stoner metal band, renowned for their extremely slow pace and the bowel movement-inducing crunch of their riffs. Merzbow was already world famous for is relentless onslaught of all things noise and terror. So where's the middle point between the two? In the drone... This is some of the best dark ambient/noise album's I've yet to hear. From the sinewave/glitch drone of Headronefish to the wall-of-sound that is Texas Spaceship, Megatone is like hitting a cement wall at mach 3. |
