Every time a new Boris release is upon us, I always expect the unexpected... and with Rainbow, I must say I was pleasantly surprised. This one has the japanese doomsters teaming up with psych compadres Ghost's guitarist Michio Kurihara and the results caught me completely off guard. After a fake Pink-like intro (shoot me if Rafflesia doesn't sound like Farewell), the album slowly drifts off towards strange, dreamlike territory with the occasional excursion into old school retro psych rock with a biting fuzz guitar (Narrador Da Espaçonave deserves a trophy by itself)! Wata gets her own number on the title track, a mellow fuzzy gem of a tune which is also available as a video clip on the DVD. The box also comes with an extra LP containing two long sludge/drone/doom numbers of the most devastating kind (I would have paid full price for these alone!) and a beautifully designed book with tons of blurry images. 500 copies, 200$.
