At this point, Bowie's stage persona was at it's most glamorous. The songs on this album are quite intense and grandiose (some even include gospel choirs, like the opening Watch That Man!). The title track has a great piano accompaniment and strange chorus, blending styles together seamlessly. Panic In Detroit is immediately recognizable with it's guitar riff and congas. A classic. But my favorite track on the album is probably Cracked Actor with it's fuzzed-out guitar and funky beat. It's just the most over-the-top song on here. Time brings out the cabaret side of Bowie's personality, something he had explored thoroughly on Hunky Dory. You then have two absolute classic David Bowie songs with Let's Spend The Night Together and Jean Genie, both are driving rock anthems. The whole thing ends with Lady Grinning Soul, closing the album on a smoother note. |
