The opening title track is such a great tune. A great psych-folk tune complete with weird electronic buzzes and morphing acoustic guitar riffs. Spaced-out and odd indeed. There's a bit of an Incredible String Band influence in the way the song progresses and changes throughout. The album on a whole is definitely on the progrock side with a fair amount of folk elements in the balance. Janine is another great song which seems to use what sounds like a thumb piano in parts. I like the way hand claps are often added to the beat on some of these songs, making them that much more engaging, providing an extra human touch to all the spaced-out moments. And then you've got Memory Of A Free Festival, a most fucked-up tune in Bowie's discography if there ever was one. Droning harmoniums, a cacophonous middle part and a sing-along outro for three minutes! |
