Often considered to be a cold and sober album by his fans, Station To Station was definitely the beginning of Bowie's more openly experimental era. Like a mix between his more soulful music and the burgeoning german krautrock scene of the time (something which he must have started listening to as it's influence slowly surfaces on this album). The over one minute long intro to the title track is just sounds recreating a train traveling in the rainy night. Strange noises sometimes join in with the distant music once it starts. Golden Years finally brings back some of the warmth we might have expected more of from Bowie with it's great guitar riff and funky beats. Stay is another, almost disco tune which brings the funk back to an otherwise gray album. Only six songs, and none of them under four minutes. |
