Another album, another persona and probably the defining moment of the glamrock movement which was to come. This is probably Bowie's most respected album as it's got "concept" written all over it. I've never bothered to actually analyze the whole background story as this rarely interests me compared to the music itself (no matter how much the two might go hand-in-hand). Bowie's heavy side shows up once again here; when the guitars decide to blast off in your face, they certainly do! Out of eleven songs, four have the word "star" in their title. Starman is a popular song, but, besides the chorus, I can't say I enjoy it that much. In fact, I must say that I only really appreciate the last four songs together (which I believe are supposed to be Ziggy's high point and eventual fall - so I have informed myself a bit! Sue me!), especially the hardball rock of Suffragette City. |
