My first exposure to Braxton's work and, considering I'm no jazz expert, it opened my eyes as to just how wide and varied and far-reaching the genre can be. These three compositions sound like a fourtet ensemble submitted to nuclear fission. No matter how uncontrolled and haphazard it sounds, there is always a certain underlying unity that shines through. Even though the music is firmly rooted in jazz, were the reed instruments to be replaced by stringed ones, it would most likely be considered a musique concrète composition. The last track is one of the most bizarre jazz pieces I've ever heard (I doubt people would even call it jazz), farting balloons and blowing sounds, mosquitoes, it's a gastric-intestinal thing. Odd, but still fascinating. As seems to be the case with all BYG Actuel re-releases however, the sound isn't all that great but that shouldn't discourage anyone from hearing this work. |
