A juggernaut of a free-jazz album. From the very first second to the last, the listener is stampeded not by musicians, but by angry mammals. It'll knock you to the ground like a baseball bat upside the head. Casual listeners beware, you can't just sit down and let this music drift you away (as it will most likely drag you with it, leaving bruises, cuts, splinters and concussions), no... you have to sit down and take it like a man. If you survive the first blow, then these pieces will slowly reveal their intricate secrets to you and sooner or later you'll find beauty within the ruckus. It took me a few listens myself, but it was worth the effort as it's rewards come back tenfold. Han Bennink (drums) and Derek Bailey (guitar) are particularly great here, but so is Brötzmann and Evan Parker's dual tenor sax play. The original LP, due to it's rarity, has made this recording become somewhat of a holy grail in this artist's discography. |
